Francesco’s remote portrait was created on A1 paper using two continuous lines with red and black Bic Biro ballpoint pens. The drawing process took approximately 21 hours and involved generating the design through a spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc.
The lines themselves comprise over 50,000 square spirals apiece. The spirals were initially drawn using Affinity Designer on an iPad Air. They were then converted to coordinates and arranged on the page according to their densities, with more dense spirals positioned to align with the darker parts of the image, and vice-versa.
