Kneeling athlete

A three-layer mosaic of a male athlete, kneeling on a gym mat.

To produce this image, I sliced a photograph into squares, three times. One of the grids this produced had large squares, one very small squares, and the third sat in between the two.

I stacked the three grids of squares with the biggest, least detailed squares on top and, where they were too dense to convey sufficient detail to make out the original image, I removed them, revealing the medium-sized squares. If they didn’t reveal sufficient detail, I removed them to uncover the smallest, finest squares.

As each lower layer is of higher definition than the one that sits immediately above it this allows for more granular control over the fidelity of the image in each area across the frame.
